Pink and Red and Glitter and Hearts! Oh My!

I've never been a huge fan of  Valentine's Day. It feels like hallmark is trying to force me to love the person I already love everyday. Justin & I will stay in, avoiding the masses, and have a nice quiet dinner. Like we do almost everyday. But maybe I'll light a few candles :)

Something I am a big fan of though is the color pink. Now in order to keep my husband happy I refrain from buying pink fluffy comforters and instead wear a bright pink sweater from time to time. But, if any of you are still here (mom?), you may remember that back in November I bought this adorable pink and red heart fabric scrap specifically for Valentine's Day. Because it's the one time of the year I can break out a couple pink hearts and not get any looks.

. . . well, not too many looks.

First I gathered my supplies. I was originally planning to make a dish towel and back it with one of Justin's white shirts. But then I decided to go with my original plan and make a table runner. So all you need is the fabric scrap, some scissors, stitch witchery, and an iron.

Then I hemmed one of the sides by placing the stitch witchery between the folded  fabric and then ironing on top. Be sure to use your iron on the "wool" setting because it helps create a stronger hold!

I did the same thing with the other side. You can see I didn't bother with making sure all my edges were perfectly straight. Oh & sorry for the horrible lighting . . . our iron is right in front of the window and I'm not a very good photographer.

Then I hemmed the ends using the same technique. Once all the edges had a clean line, I swapped out the maroon curtain we usually use as a runner for this festive heart-adorned one!

I switched some of our decorations around too. I got that awesome green vase from my sister-in-law for Christmas and I love it! And I changed out Justin's drawings in the one frame too.

Check out the book in the middle of my stack. Help your husband stay alive! It has the funniest marital advice from the 50s. I should do a post one day on the stuff inside that book - it's hilariously awesome.

Back to the project at hand . . . since I already had the stitch witchery, the only thing I bought was the fabric. This brings the grand total for this project to 50 cents!! Not bad for a little loving-cheer. :)

Are you decorating for Valentine's Day? Have you made any lovely crafts lately?

  1. Am I the only blogger that loves Valentine's Day? LOL. I think it's awesome that once a year we can wip out the hearts and pinks and get away with it.

Your runner looks awesome. You should put a big flower in that vase :)

    1. I want to put something in that vase . . . but since nothing lives this time of year I went to michaels the other day thinking i could get a fake spray of something. But i felt so lost! I had no clue what would look good. Any suggestions on what kind of spray/flower to get?

  2. That runner is adorable! And I feel you on the Hallmark holiday. Forrest and I might go out to a special dinner, but only because we missed our first Valentine's Day together due to his deployment. Last year I just put on something nice (translated I took off my steel toes and jeans and put my hair down) and cooked something a little nicer at home. And I love hydrangeas for the flowers in that pretty vase!

    1. Ohh hydrangeas!! :) I have some dried ones in our dining room and I love them!

I hear you about the putting on something nice - that usually means that I change out of my sweats and take my hair out of a ponytail for the first time in months! hahaha. :)

  3. It looks great! I actually bought the same fabric for a pillow project I'll most likely never get to since there's only about a week left until V-Day.

I'm not a huge fan of Valentine's Day either. I also lump Mother's and Father's Day into that mix. Appreciate the people in your life every day, not just because a bunch of companies tell you to buy them something.

  4. Aw, this is nice! I'm with you on the whole Valentines Day thing... but I could probably stand to add a little red and pink to my days. ;)

  5. I'm a fan of Valentine's Day, but not for pink little hearts and stuff like that. Jesse buys me stuff and is a cutie all year round, but on Valentine's Day I get flowers, a cute sentimental gift that makes me cry, a nice dinner AND he dresses up a bit. I only get all that 2 days out of the year: Valentine's and our anniversary. So for selfish reasons I'm a fan lol This year we are waiting and celebrating V-Day on the 15th so we can celebrate both that and closing on the house.

  6. This is so cute! And on a side note, I LOVE that buffet/table thing! I haven't done any Valentine crafts before, but I'm thinking I may do a wreath this year :)

    1. Thanks!! That table is my parent's old kitchen table from when they were first married. They got it at an antique auction a long, long time ago . . .
Oh a wreath! That would be awesome :)

  7. Such a subtle, sweet statement! I don't mind a few pink and red touches around the house this time of year. And I love that vintage table!

  8. What an adorable runner...and I'm with "the rookie years"...that is such a great table!! I love it!

My hubby and I are the same with Valentine's Day too. We don't make a huge deal out of it, and in the past two years, we didn't even buy each other anything because we were majorly saving for our house and had a strict "no presents for holidays" rule in effect. I'm curious what our Valentine's Day will be like for us this year haha.

    Anywho, great little project! :)

  9. Your valentine's day plans sound like mine. Why bother spending a bunch money going out to eat on the same night everybody else is. And seriously why do we need a corporation to tell us to show some love to our spouse? I do hope y'all enjoy your lovely evening together though.
