Lighting Upgrades

You know the final walk through you do the day before or day of closing? When you're just checking to see if the sellers were hiding any holes in the walls with artwork or covering any stained floors with rugs? Well, we didn't find any of those tell-tale deceptive signs. . . instead we found a hanging hall light.
Our realtor explained to us that we could ask the sellers to fix this since it was properly secured when we made an offer on the house, but we figured it just needed to be fixed with a few screws so we didn't bother.

Actually I think our exact words were, "Don't worry about it. We can fix it this weekend. It's no big deal."

HA.

We were right in one sense - it wasn't a big deal at all. But did we fix it that weekend? No. We lived with that sucker hanging down for 6 MONTHS.

This view greeted us as we walked down the hall every day. Real classy.

So it's a new year and we decided to do something about this light. At first we were going to spray paint it like we did to our brassy fixtures downstairs, but instead we raised the bar. While perusing the aisles at Home Depot the other day, we found and bought this Hampton Bay track light. At just under $50, it was a little pricier than we would have liked - but it was pretty and we decided to try it anyway.

I love the oil-rubbed bronze color. And I love that we can position the lights to shine where we'd like. The main reason we decided to get this light was because we can highlight our artwork on the walls once we get around to actually hanging it.

See how the light shines right on the wall? We have big plans for that space. Right after we get around to painting the hall. We've had the paint for about 3 months already. . . so if we keep to our previous schedule you should expect to see this finished space in March.

But hey, it is a new year after all . . . so maybe it'll be done in February. :)

PS: When I came home last night Justin was installing another one of these lights in our living room. He replaced the boob light in the top right corner. Now our lighting matches! I'll have to take an updated picture and share that soon, along with the new piece of furniture that lives in this room!
Has anyone else taken a long time to make a simple upgrade? What do you think of our new lights? Any guesses on what new piece of furniture we have?

  1. Ohhh, love the new light fixture!
I don't think it was a bad price either.

  2. It's the little things that don't get done I find. And...you start not to notice it right? But when you do it makes you annoyed. Glad you fixed it and the light looks great?

  3. I can relate to this post. When we purchased our house over four years ago I had planned to repaint all the door since the previous owners dog had clawed them. It took me three years to do that. On top of that we bought paint for our bedroom the fourth of July.... and haven't started painting it yet. Maybe like you, 2012 will be the year!

I've been putting off painting trim since about October. Maybe I'll do it this weekend...

  7. We need to paint the bedroom (it's this horrible white and you can see hints of a brown underneath it). I can't wait to knock that off the list!

  9. Lol, that's great. Makes me feel better about our endless list! It took us about 4 months to fix a light in our coat closet...finally got that done last week! ;)

  10. Wow! I love that light fixture. I like that it has "spot lights" which can be used to accent furniture, art, or whatever else you have in that room! Great choice.

  11. That looks great! I anticipate living with a whole bunch of dangling fixtures, cracked trim, exposed outlets and half removed wallpaper for a lot longer than we anticipate. The new light fixture looks great! Can't wait to see the new furniture.

  12. I am SO GLAD that we are not the only ones who put off projects like that. I literally laughed out loud in relief that someone else sometimes does the same thing! :-)

  14. Down with boob lights (especially broken ones)!

We do the same thing. Our bathroom sink has been unusable for a month... it's kinda a big deal, but we just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet!

  16. Oh, we're so guilty of ignoring silly little things that need to be fixed. My guess for a new piece of furniture...some chairs, perhaps?

  18. Don't feel bad. . .I've been in my house for almost TWO YEARS and I JUST got around to painting my son's bathroom last week! It might not have been so bad if I hadn't painted test swatches on the wall (four different colors total) oh. . .fifteen minutes after we moved in and the poor kid had to live with the bathroom that way for the next two years! I have a lampost light that I bought right after I moved in (to replace an U-G-L-Y old brass one) that is still sitting by the front door. In the original box. Yes, it's been there for two years. Trust me, you're not alone! :-)

  19. I'm loving that light fixture. We have all lights with ceiling fans, but if not, I would totally go for something like this. It looks kinda antiquish, but with a whole lot of modern. Ahh, love it!
